![]() It's destined to a point in space 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, too far away for astronauts to visit and fix the telescope if something goes wrong. Roughly 100 times more powerful than its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, which has transformed our understanding of the cosmos over the past 31 years, Webb will reveal previously hidden aspects of the Universe. If all goes according to plan, Webb will redo astronomy by observing cosmic phenomena such as the most distant galaxies ever seen, the atmospheres of distant planets, and the hearts of star-forming regions wrapped in dust. Keep reading about Webb’s observation of Cartwheel: ĬOMPARED INFOGRAPHY: HOW FAR BACK IN TIME CAN THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE SEE COMPARED TO THE HUBBLE? The second smaller galaxy underneath has a different character entirely, carrying older star populations and its own black hole, much like the core of the Cartwheel. The smaller companion galaxy to the top left, an irregular Magellanic spiral, shares many of the same features as the Cartwheel on the right, including the young star populations and dust. ![]() This dust feeds the active black hole, trailing from the Cartwheel’s outer ring and creating the “spokes” that give the galaxy its name. MIRI shows us the hydrocarbon dust, glowing crimson red in response to the heat from nearby young stars. It also gives us a look at the large number of distant galaxies behind this group of three galaxies. ![]() These hues reflect older star populations and dense dust in the core of the Cartwheel-which contains a supermassive black hole-and the young star populations outside it. NIRCam provides us with blue, orange, and yellow shades. This image of the Cartwheel and its companion galaxies is a composite between NASA's James Webb Space Telescope’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). Just in from the JWST! The dynamics and colors of the Cartwheel Galaxy, the large ring galaxy on the far right, are reminiscent of fireworks.
